Take That

Take That (722x721)Pick of the week 10/7/16

Went to BST to see Take That in Hyde Park on Saturday.

A long day, left early, parked in Osterly tube station (easy – do so again), went into “town” before heading to Hyde Park.

Hung out in a field with my (beautiful) wife for eight hours until the main event – and they were fab!

Don’t get the whole “festival thing” (and this was festival lite) – lots of sitting around in a field waiting (at least the weather was OK!), I think there is an element of Emperor’s new clothes about festivals, but was worth it for the main event.  Take That were brilliant (would have expected nothing less).  Would do it again, but would arrive until later in the day.

Prom Queen!

Hard to believe it, but Sophie has finished Year 11 and Thursday was her leavers’ assembly and then Prom Night in the evening.

Where have all the years gone? I still remember my little girl toddling around Crewkerne, and here she is now all (nearly) grown up having finished her GCSEs.

One very proud Dad.

Brexit

BrexitPic of the week 26/7/16

Woke with a little anticipation on Friday morning and headed downstairs to check the referendum result, fully expecting a vote to Remain.

I was staggered, stunned and somewhat frightened to see that we’d voted to leave by 52% to 48%.

I was surprised by the result and also a little surprised by my reaction and how much doom and gloom it has filled me with since.

In the run up to the referendum I’d flipped and flopped between in and out and, if I’m honest, for some time I was an “outer”, although I think I secretly hoped that if I voted out the country would vote to remain.

About 10 days before the referendum, my thoughts crystallised and I become a convinced remainer. Although it pained me that voting to stay in the EU would give some legitimacy to the bloated and corrupt bureaucracy that is the EU, this couldn’t negate the positives of the EU (freedom of movement, the EU is about the only institution big enough and capable of taking on corporate giants like Microsoft & Google etc.) and, at the end of the day, the UK has (had?) the 5th biggest economy in the world and why would you do anything to jeopardize that?

I was quite surprised with my strength of feeling as I put my “X” in the box to Remain, having fully realised that it was the best course of action. And to discover, on Friday, we’d voted out has left me fearful for the future. Who knows how it will play out? Perhaps it will all work out for the best, perhaps the status quo will remain, but in the short (to medium) term, we’re in for one bumpy, bumpy ride. I feel quite angry towards my fellow brits who have allowed hype and fear of immigration to lead them to make the decision they have made. I really do think that most outers voted as a “two fingered salute” to the political classes without fully understanding what they have done. And the sad thing is is that it is those that voted out will proboably be those that suffer the most. They’ve been sold a pup by Farage, Johnson and Gove and we’ll end up paying the bill.

A sad day.

Swarm!

SwarmPic of the week 12/6/16

Monday evening, circa 6.30pm. A beautiful summer’s evening and we were all sat out in the new space created by the removal of the summer house, kicking back and chillin’; enjoying each others company, listenting to the sounds of summer: bees buzzing, swallows swooping, bees buzzing, BEES BUZZING ….!

I looked up, and not a foot above my head was a swarm of bees! A calm (swift!) retreat to asses the situation!

Google revealed the names and numbers of some local bee keepers, one of whom kindly came over from Wookey, snipped the branch that the bees were clustered on, popped them in a wicker basket, covered them with a sheet and took them away to replenish his hives.

All rather exciting and informative.

Half term

summerhouse montage (722x720)Pick of the week 5/6/16

What a manly half term:

I built a new shed:

new shedI knocked down the summerhouse, fixed the car when it wouldn’t start, ran 6k twice, swam 2K twice, a mile once and totaled 288 lengths of the pool, chopped down the tops of two hefty trees in the hedge … and all of this in one week.

I’ve got 4 weeks back at school now, before the long eight week summer holiday – not sure how I’ll survive it, I’ll be a physical wreck come September!

The rain stayed away most of the time and sun shone on occasion, a great, fulfilling and productive week.

Revision!

Sophie revisionPic of the week 29/5/16

It’s been a big week that has seen Sophie’s GCSEs start in earnest, with two English exams, maths and a geography exam.

She’s worked hard – as her room testifies! – so I’m sure she’ll do well. She’s been taking it comfortably in her stride, a brief respite for half term now and then back for two more weeks.  She finishes term even earlier than me this year!

He’s getting big!

This pic was taken on Tuesday 17th May and shows Sam nearly as tall as me!

He’s getting big, … and strong.  I now have to use all my wiles and cunning to defeat him in a wrestling or pushing match, but defeat him I do!

Shed Base

shed base (1024x1024)Pic of the week 15/5/16

So last week was removing the hedge, this week was laying the shed base.

I used the bag of sharp sand left by the builders in the front garden and mixed it in the ratio 8 parts sand to 1 part (white) cement – again left by the builders.  This gave me a dry mix which I then spread on the area and added cheap paving slabs from B&Q on the top, tapping them down to get the level.

Gathered up some of the spare sand/cement mix and added some more cement which I brushed into the joints as pointing,  Still have some of this mix in a bucket, should I need to add more pointing.

It’s all (pointing & base layer) not “gone off” – I’m presuming that the natural moisture in the grounds percolates through and causes it to set, although I don’t expect it to go rock hard. The area wont be subject to lots of traffic – just needs to provide a solid level base for the shed to go up (hopefully in half term) Plan is to get an 8×5 foot “pent” shed.  Watch this space – I’m sure that that is a blog post waiting to happen!

(p.s. look at them Lilly-white legs!  Don’t think they’ve ever been this white, certainly not in mid-May.  Although its been warm & sunny for the last week, it has been a cool/cold spring and my legs only emerged a week ago. But the buns are looking firm and round!)

Shed Hedge

The sun has finally shone (shorts worn for the first time this year on Friday 6th May) and we decided to tackle the hedge along the fence, in preparation for the (new) shed to go there, allowing the removal of the summer house that sits in the prime sunshine spot.

Hedge beforeThere was quite a bit of hedge to get rid of – this pic doesn’t really do it justice, but it was big, overgrown and very, very prickly.

shed hedge chopped down (1024x1024)Chopped back, awaiting disposal.

shed hedge nearly finishedStarting to look a lot tidier

shed hedge final (1024x1024)… and the finished space. Didn’t have quite enough membrane so the corner will wait whilst I order some more.  The it will be filled with sand (finally getting rid of the dumpy bag left by the builders at the front of the house) mixed with a bit of cement and topped with paving slabs, ready for a new shed (still to be ordered.)
