Nettles!

Pic of the week 26/4/20

One of the (few) bonuses of lock down has been Boris walks – we are permited to exercise daily – may be a run, a cycle of a walk – and I have begun to join Becky and Sam on their evening perambulations (Sophie rarely leaves the house).

We’ve become more adventurous, ranging further and further from the house and yesterday evening we broke new ground.  We headed down to Pomparles bridge, but crossed the road and followed the Brue to the north.  We’d not been going long before we realised the error of our ways – the path was flanked – swamped – by nettles and I was wearing shorts and, although Becky had leggings on, they didn’t cover her ankles.

We were getting stung. Mercilessly.

Fortunately Sam had had the sense to wear long trousers and so we commanded him to take the lead, and like a land based ice breaker, stomp down all the nettles in our path, to cut a narrow furrow for us to pass through.

We still got stung lots, but we made it through. It turned out to be a beautiful walk, we saw swans and herons and, as we headed home, the sun was setting, a most magnificent ball of red in the sky.  A view worth the pain of a few nettle stings.

During the day on Saturday and Sunday, I spent much time in the garden, swapping the spring bulbs for summer bedding. Much earlier than I normally would – a combination of beautiful weather and a lock-down regime of no Saturday school, and no distractions from beyond our for walls.

The garden is looking much neater, and ready for its summer show. The only downside is that, in lock down, our “green” is not being collected and the tip is shut, so I have an ever increasing pile of clippings and weeds mounting in a corner by the shed.

And two running milestones were met today:

  1. A passed 300 Km for the year
  2. My first sun 48 min 10K – didn’t just creep under, but smashed it. Missed out 47 mins altogether and posted a time of 46 min 48 secs.

2019 – A Year in Stats

Having graphed my stats for 2018 (see posts here and here) it was only right that I do the same for 2019, so here they are.

Having run a few more 10Ks this year, I’ve included that data in my charts:

I think the next two charts are informative, showing how my running time changes over the year:

(This year I’ve plotted my data by week rather than by day (for ease of data collection))

And my weight:

although interestingly my lowest weight doesn’t correlate directly with my quickest running times. Although, the 7K v Weight plot does, once again, show correlation between the two:

First job the new year – get that weight back down!

18th December

Pic of the week 22/12/19

It was a fateful night, the 18th December 1992, the night I won at the lottery of life.

27 years ago this week, I met Becky at Joe Bananas night club in Bath, and my life has been complete ever since. (And, on the evidence of the photo above, I don’t think we’ve aged badly, either!)

This week has seen the rain continue to fall – sometimes in biblical proportions. On Wednesday we went to Cornwall for the day to visit Becky’s M&D and her Granny. The rain began as we entered Cornwall, but rose to a crescendo for our drive home – it was horrendous. Sam drove the first hour, in preparation for his test the next day, and then I took over as darkness fell before we reached the motorway. Conditions were horrific.

Sadly, Sam failed his test the next day (again, driving in torrential rain) – he did well, but failed to check over his shoulder as he merged into the third lane at the “Asda” roundabout in Yeovil.

Saw Dad, Rog & his bambinos yesterday – was good to see him. We ate at the Fosso lounge in Wells and chewed the cud as well as a rather tasty chilly beef dish.

I’ve been running a few times this week – did a 10K today, my first since August and I was pleased to get round the distance in respectable 47 min 46 seconds. As I’ve been referee-ing on most Sundays, I haven’t run much since the summer. I think I’ve retained my fitness, but once again, it is surprising how the fitness is so “task” specific – some of my splits have been slow, and whilst I could cruise round 10K without thinking about it in the summer, I’ve had to work up to the distance I completed today.

I’ve also been using quite a bit of my holiday time to continue with my Spanish, and I do think I am beginning to make inroads.

Feliz Navidad y prespero ano.

A busy week

Pic of the week 15/12/19

Its been a busy week.

On Tuesday, Becky & I ventured out to Bristol to see Scouting for Girls. As ever, they were excellent.

On Thursday I  had a dental check up – all good.

Friday morning I ran my 400th Km of the year (have just looked back at last year – ran 424 Km in the year, so will hit a similar amount this year.

Also on Friday we went to Reading to collect Sophie. She had an exam in the afternoon, so Becky & went shopping before meeting Sophie “for tea” in “The Real Greek” (v. nice food) and then heading home through the dark and rain. Always nice to have the whole family back under one roof for Christmas.

On Saturday I refereed my last game of the (calendar) year – Wells City U16 v Saints South West. Cold & windy, but stayed dry. Was due to ref today (Sunday) but game was off due to a wet pitch. With the Y&DL and Bridgwater Sunday league both now on their Christmas breaks, I think I can now rest my whistle until January.

Oh, and Thursday was General Election day. The Tory’s romped home with a massive majority. Looks like we’ll be out of Europe by the end of January. Whilst a Conservative victory was expected, no-one expected it to be by so much.

I crunched some data and wrote a blog post on my maths teacher writes site but here’s a chart that shows the seats won.

Kick off – and New Order

Pic of the week 21/7/19

My (pre) season has begun, with games on Tuesday – Ashcott Reserves v Lantokay at Strode Astro, and a line on Saturday Bishops Lydeard v Exmouth Town, both Western League teams, Exmouth in the Premier Division and BL in Div 1, so Step 5 and Step 6 respectively. Enjoyed both games, am looking forward to the season to come.

On Thursday Becky & I went to see New Order at Bristol Harbour Festival – Lloyd’s Ampitheater – a great gig on a warm, cloudless night. Really enjoyed it, Temptation was, not surprisingly, my highlight. But their finale, Love Will Tear Us Apart was pretty good too (and better than Paul Young’s from earlier in the year)

Running news: – Clocked up my 300th Km of the year today

Running Backwards

Pic of the week 14/7/19

Yesterday afternoon, sat in the back garden whilst taking a rest from hall decorating (see below) I heard a deep, rumbling roar and looked up to see a Lancaster flying by. It flew round the back of the Tor before doing another circuit and then heading off to (presumably) Yeovilton Air Show. A magnificent sight.

Today I ran my 10K backwards. Not literally, of course, that would have been foolish, but in the reverse direction. On the whole, I ran it faster – was an interesting experiment that I must repeat some day.

Having decorated the upstairs hall & stairwell, my attention turned to the downstairs hall.  Still to be finished, but looks a whole lot better than before.

On Friday, Sophie, Becky and I went to see Scouting for Girls at Frome Cheese and Grain.

It was chuffing hot, but it was, not surprisingly, brilliant.

We ended up about three back from the front, a jumping, thumping, pumping set of their favourites. A great night.

And Sam applied for his Provisional Driving Licence – not long now …

Take That

Pic of the week 2/6/19

So half term draws to a close -it’s whipped by far too quickly, but with only four weeks until the golden prize of the summer holidays, the end of hols sting is easily absorbed.

On Tuesday, Becky & I went to see Take That at Ashton Gate and, not surprisingly, they were excellent. More of a “classic” concert than their more theatrical “shows”, but they belted out all the hits with passion and panache and I really enjoyed it. Rick (Astley) wasn’t bad either – “Never Going to Give You Up” be belted out by thirty thousand was a sound to behold, too.

On Friday I went for my annual* shearing – back and chest wax. The back is over in minutes whilst suffering, at worst, mild discomfort. The chest, however is a whole different ball game (and I ain’t even going to contemplate going there …) It was soooo painful – I did actually feel a little weak and nauseous walking home afterwards. But the pain ebbs and now I’m left with smooth skin and only a smattering of measle like red rashes!  *I think the answer may be to make it more regular than annual – it was the sheer forest of hair that needed removing that made it so painful; perhaps if I have it removed more regularly it’ll be less painful.

Running – yesterday I ran my 200th Km and, after today’s 10K, I’ve done 217 Km so far this year, not bad. And my running season is now upon me – with no football to referee on Sunday’s its a 10K each Sabbath, and with the summer hols a mere four weeks away, I should be pounding the streets with a regularity that’ll soon see the next 100K notched up.

Race Day!

Pic of the week 5/5/19

Today was race day – Glastonbury 10K.

Cool (verging on cold), little or no wind, mix of sun and cloud.

Pleased with my run, still awaiting official “chip time”, but my wristwatch time was 47 mins 43 secs. My “phone time” was 46:34, but this called the 10K early by about 100 to 200 yards so an extra minute on that time would be about right.

Update: Official chip time 47 min 30 sec

Position 141 out of of 566 runners, 14 out of 46 Male 50 – 55 category

Enjoyed the race, enjoyed the event, pleased to achieved (smashed!) my fewer minutes than age in years challenge.

Have just looked back through some old logs for 10K times:

Sep 2005 S Mallet: 50.52

April 2006 Longleat 53.32

October 2007 Longleat 52.43

Oct 2009 S Mallett 55.53

Oct 2009 Longleat 57.20

May 2010 Wells 57.28

So a p.b by some margin!

A Year in Stats

This year, like last, I’ve collected stats on my exercise.

But this year, I’ve also explored “R” – a programming language for statistics, and used it to produce some pretty charts about my year’s activities.  Above is a box plot of my spinning.

I’ve also looked at my running split times:

I like the two above – showing my 2nd K to be my most consistent, my 4th the least. My 2nd K is the same for whatever run I run, but my 4th K is a very different beast depending on whether I do the 6K loop – in which case the 4th K is uphill, or the 7K loop, in which case its much flatter.

Having plotted the above – time to run 7K as a time series, is a remarkably similar shape to my weight as a time series:

I shouldn’t be too surprised, but to confirm my theory, I did a plot of weight v time to run 7Ks – not surprisingly their looks to be some correlation (note to self – need to find put how to use R to calculate the PMCC)

The gloves are on

Pic of the week 28/10/18

Yesterday we went to visit Sophie at uni in Reading.

It was lovely to see her again, and a lovely family day. An easy two hours in the car to Reading, met her at her Halls, before we all went “into town.”

It turns out Reading is a nice town – modern, vibrant, etc. etc.

But even better was the discovery that Sophie is thriving at uni – she seemed so happy, so organised, enjoying her subject: thriving. A great day.

Today I went for a run. Fortunately I had had the foresight to hunt out my running gloves a couple of days ago as it was cold, very cold. After such a fantastic summer that never seemed to end, and a benign, beautiful autumn, the cold snap that has snapped over the last couple of days has come as a real shock.

Running wasn’t easy today, I seem to have lost my “easy, lolloping bounce” – I was aware of every impact of foot on ground with every stride. As soon as I encountered the slightest incline or headwind my split time crept above 5 mins per K. Still did 7 K in a respectable time, but a good minute slower than my summer pace. With half term now upon us, perhaps I can get some miles in and get back to running ways.
