Track of the week 16/7/17

A frothy, fizzy tune that still manages to keep its cool.

Swing Out Sister – another band that I first encountered on the “Beat Runs Wild” album. On that was “Another lost weekend” – a bit more serious, and a lot less fun (and not nearly as good) as Breakout – a worthy track of the week.

Track of the week 9/7/17

One of those songs that I’m not sure why it popped into my head this week, but it did, and has stuck in there ever since.

I naturally assumed that this video was shot in Scotland – the big country of the title – but I have since discovered that it was filmed in Dorset: I though parts of it looked familiar – honestly!

The castle at the beginning is Corfe Castle and the seaside town and pier is Swanage. I always liked Sawnage and have fond memories of the four of us on holiday on that pier.  Becky never ceases to remind Sam that the top of Corfe Castle was when he first had a Milky Way, and so began his love of chocolate!

Somebody has done a great “then and now” video comparing locations – even if you don’t like the track (and you should!) worth watching the video below:

Possibly the worst track from the best album, ever.

Seems appropriate given the heatwave that we had at the start of the week.

Track of the week 18/6/17

Slightly left field selection this week.

The first rap/hip hop track I really got into – about 30 years ago (I’m guessing ’86 or 87).  I had it on a compilation album – can’t remember what else was on the album, seem to recall it had an orange cover,  but remember I liked this track, even if I did think it a bit bonkers.  Might have to have a rummage through my vinyl (under the eves!) and fish it out – don’t have anything to play it on, but am curious as to what else was on the album.  Maybe I don’t have it any longer?

Anyway, possibly the only track to sample the theme tune from Inspector Gadget.

Track of the week 11/6/17

Back in ancient Rome, a “Triumph” would be accorded to a successful military commander –  a great ceremony as they would process through the streets of Rome to the acclaim of the citizens.

They would have two slaves with them, one to lead the cart, the other to stand behind the victorious general, and whisper “Memento homo” (remember, you are mortal) in his ear.

I’ve come to realise that Take That’s Never Forget is the modern day equivalent. If only Theresa May had listened to this (fantastic) track she might not have called the election, or at least acted differently – a little less arrogantly perhaps – during the campaign.

But she didn’t, so we once again find ourselves living in interesting times.

Wise words from the bard Gary Barlow, we’d all do well to heed them when we think we’ve reached the top …

Track of the week 4/6/17
After last night’s excursion the track of the week had to be a Take That track and this is my favourite.

Great tune, great video (recommend watching it), great metaphor – you might not win the initial race, but keep on keeping on and you will reach your own sunlit uplands (although I’m not sure rowing is the best way to reach sunlit uplands? But if there is a flood, you probably do want to be on some uplands. I think I’m stretching (and mangling?) this metaphor a bit much now. Just hit play and enjoy the music.)

Track of the week 28/517
Think this would make it into my personal top twenty, maybe even my Top Ten tracks, ever.

Insatntly takes me back to my fourth year at Uni and sticky floored discos in “Notty Hall.”

At the time I had no idea what it was about, I just (& still do) loved the upbeat indie track, and its anthemic nature. Have since realised its all about mental illness.

Play it and you can’t help but sing along.

Track of the week 7/5/17

Eurovision must be approaching as I recently read a countdown of the top 50(?) UK entries and this was near the top.

Another slice of cheesecake, but a good uplifting track that’ll worm its way into your head. You have been warned – play at your peril!
