Sloop John B – The Beach Boys

Track of the week 30/4/17

Didn’t have an obvious track of the week for this week, but listened to this the other day and it was first up when I opened YouTube this evening – a good enough reason to secure its spot as totw.

Danny Says – Foo Fighters

Track of the week 23/4/17
I enjoy my spinning classes on a Friday night. I look forward to it during the day, enjoy the exercise, a great stress buster to end the week.

One of the treats of being on holiday is to be able to do an extra spinning class on a Tuesday lunchtime. These sessions have a different feel to the Friday lessons which seem to be more about hills and strength, and grinding out the miles. Tuesdays see greater variety and a greater emphasis of core muscle groups. And a different play list.

I’ve heard – and enjoyed – this track on the Tuesday spinning sessions this holiday. Took me a while to work out what the song actually was, but by the power of YouTube I discovered it was Danny Says by the Foo Fighters.

The First Picture of You – Lotus Eaters

Track of the week 16/4/17
I had to check that I hadn’t posted this as TotW before and was surprised to discover that I hadn’t.

Rediscovered and fell in love with this song last summer and played it constantly – ticking all the boxes as to why I created track of the week, to remember those songs that have been buzzing around my head for a period of time.

Not sure I really remember it from the first time round – it would have been a bit too sophisticated for me in ’83, but now a few(!) years older with more refined tastes I recognise it for the beautiful bit of music that it is. On a sunny summer’s day its perfect – here’s hoping we have more than our fair share of those this year.

See the flowers scream their joy

Tell me when my light turns green – Dexys Midnight Runners

Track of the week 9/4/17
So last week’s TotW was Geno by Dexys Midnight Runners because my bro gave me the album “Searching for the young soul rebels” for my birthday, and a great track it is too.

I’ve been listening to the album a lot and this track – “Tell me when my lights turn green” is a new favourite – an absolute killer track. I love the brass instrumental breaks, the upbeat, uplifting feel of the whole track. It must be good – its made it on to my iPod library!

Play it, enjoy it.

Geno – Dexys Midnight Runners

Track of the week 2/4/17

For my birthday earlier in the week Rog gave me “Searching for the young soul rebels” CD by Dexys Midnight Runners.  This is the headline track on the album, and it is a great track, but the whole album is well worth listening to.

I do sometimes pity the youth of today. All their technology, music and video on demand etc. has left them with the need for instant gratification and they probably (although I have no evidence to back this up) listen to an album in its entirety and discover hidden gems.

Anyway, as a single track, Geno is well worth a listen to, as is the album – it contains a fair few hidden gems.

We’ve got tonight – Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton

Track of the week 26/3/17

A slice of pure cheese on toast this week.

Not sure why its been in my head this week, but it has. Am absolute belter!

The comments on YouTube are worth reading, too.  I think this is my favourite:

Who dressed this girl? Those clothes look like a cross between a garage mechanic and Marty McFly!

New England – Kirsty McColl

Track of the week 19/3/17
Heard this on the radio today – what a great song.
First encountered it on Billy Bragg’s Life’s a Riot with Spy v Spy album, but I do think that this is a better version. (I think Billy agrees, too!)

Burning Bridges – Mike Curb Congregation

Track of the week 12/3/17

Bit of a left field choice for TotW the week, but I do like this track, and the film.

Haven’t watched the film for many years, but I do like the story and I like the sentiment of the lyrics of the song. Probably burnt a few bridges myself down the years, but I’ve always had a tendency to look forward rather than back, and I think that that is a good thing.
