99 Red Balloons

Track of the week 31/1/16

Nena’s “99 Red Balloons” has always been a guilty pleasure of mine since I first heard in, I reckon, ’86. It makes it appearance as track of the week as Sunday evenings currently find me watching Deutschland 83, a nostalgic spy thriller on Channel 4.

Dusty!

Track of the week 24/1/16

Not sure where, but I heard a Dusty Springfield track on a TV programme in the week and it got me searching through YouTube and Amazon music to listen again to her hits.

“You don’t have to say you love me” – possibly my favourite Dusty track.

On the loo!

How to spend a Tuesday evening in January. After 24 years, the romance is still alive!

Bought a bog in a box and a basin from B&Q. Livin’ the dream!

Back on the road again

post injury run and splitsWhen I injured my knee on 3rd of Jan, I think I did it quite a bit of damage. It hurt a lot, for some time, and for the last week of the hols I did no exercise and walked with a definite limp.

As time went on, it slowly improved – I found that it tended to feel better after swimming and I was able to referee a couple of football games, although on the first Thursday back at school it hurt like hell, a combination, I think, of refereeing the day before followed by going up and down stairs whilst on duty in Walton.

Anyway, its been getting better so I thought I would hit the road today and go for a shortish run.

Nearly turned back as soon as I got down the hill – it hurt – but the pain eased and I ran to the B&Q roundabout and back.  Glad I ran, the knee hurt at times, although feels fine know.  The real indicator will be how it feels later today.

The run itself wasn’t easy, either. Amazing how quickly your fitness drops off.

But at least I’m back in the saddle ….

Yellow Card!

Yellow cardIssued my first, ever, yellow card today.

Great game, Millfield U16Bs, bolstered by some 5ths, v Kings Taunton 2nd XI. Thoroughly enjoyed refereeing it, game ebbed and flowed, finished 3-3 with both sides leading at some time.  Millfield grabbed an equaliser 3 minutes from time.  A deserved score, Millfield played some lovely, cultured passing football, King’s Taunton were a little bigger, more physical and employed route one.  A clash of styles on a slippery surface.

Last 30 seconds of the first half, and KT broke, their speedy left winger collecting the ball outside the area and accelerating towards the byline.  “Michael” (we’ll leave it at that to preserve his anonymity) raced across the meet him and scythed him down 5 yards outside the corner of the box.

The tackle was about 2 weeks late, could possibly have warranted a sending off, but probably not at this level. I reached for my cards – but they had stuck together, so I rather gingerly showed him the yellow, conscious that the red was stuck to the back. I feared if I brandished it too vigorously others might see the rear of the card and think that I had sent him off!

Anyway, a first! Perhaps a line in the sand has been crossed and I’ll be reaching for my pocket with regularity in  the future …?

The Cutter

Track of the week 17/1/16

Rediscovered this a few weeks ago. No idea what it means, but it’s a great tune.

Hedge Trimming

(although the pic was taken on 9/1/16!)

Chopped down a branch of the tree in the bottom right corner of the garden as it was obscuring the morning sun, then also trimmed down the long shoots of pyracantha that were doing likewise. (Very thorny!).  Still all needs tidying up, but was a rare dry day, an enjoyable couple of hours pottering in the garden in January.

Only blight was two dollops of cat cr@p on the lawn – seems my cat scarer is not as effective as I would have hoped. Now investigating prickly strips to put across the fence top and wall. The war continues!

Break Through!

Breakthrough (768x1024)Pic of the week: 9/1/16

Had to be this – the breakthrough between the new build and old house happened this week.

Not the most artistic of snaps, but a significant event.

The pic shows the “doorway” made to connect the upstairs of the newbuild with the box room (which will become my study space) of the old house.

Glimmers of the end are begin to drift into sight, but mustn’t get too excited at this stage – still much to do (and spend!)
